Applying to ASU's John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering

How to apply to the John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering. Find out how to apply and where, admission requirements and what the full application process entails.

  1. Primary application
The primary application is completed at the national level with the American Medical College Application Service®, also known as AMCAS®. For more information on the AMCAS process, please review the AMCAS website and applicant guide for your application year.
  2. Secondary application
Candidates meeting eligibility requirements for entry will be invited to complete a secondary application. The secondary application includes four questions that will help the admissions committee learn more about how your experiences, qualifications and goals for the future complement the school’s mission and programming. Re-applicants to medical school will have an additional fifth question to share what experiences and activities they participated in since their initial application that have helped to better prepare them for medical school and beyond.
  3. Interviewing with ASU's Shufeldt medical school
The school’s interview process includes two traditional interviews held virtually. One interview will be with a physician faculty member and the other will be with an engineering faculty member. One interview will be with a medical school faculty member and the other will be with an engineering faculty member. Interviews will typically take place August through March. For the 2025–26 application season, interviews will take place January through March.
  4. Admissions decisions
Following AAMC protocol regarding medical school admissions traffic rules, Oct. 15 is the first day traditional admissions decisions can be announced each application season. ASU follows a rolling admissions process, and admissions decisions will be made between October and April. Admissions decisions for candidates holding a waitlist spot will be made March through June. For the 2025–26 application season, decisions will be announced February through April.
  5. Second look
Each spring, admitted candidates to ASU's school of medicine and engineering will be invited to participate in Second Look. This event provides a valuable opportunity for admitted medical students to visit the campus and engage more deeply with the institution. It allows students to connect with current ASU students, faculty and staff to explore academic and clinical resources and gain a clearer understanding of the school’s culture, values and learning environment. This experience can help accepted students assess how well the program aligns with their educational preferences, professional goals and overall fit to help make an informed decision on where to attend medical school.
