Our commitment to a positive learning environment

The John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering has adopted a Learning Environment Statement inspired by national standards to define its culture. The statement reflects our belief that a safe, inclusive and supportive environment empowers students to grow as compassionate and competent physicians.

In this environment, we expect every member of our community — students, faculty, residents, staff and clinical partners — to:

Treat others with dignity and respect.

Support a collaborative and collegial culture.

Serve as mentors, role models and lifelong learners.

This statement is shared widely across the school and serves as the foundation for its culture, training and policies that promote professionalism and humanism in medicine.

Monitoring and supporting the learning environment

White Coat Ceremony

In the beginning of your ASU journey, you’ll take part in a powerful tradition — receiving your white coat and reciting a customized oath you and your classmates have crafted. This ceremony symbolizes your commitment to professionalism, humanism and service.

Ongoing education and reflection

Through coaching lunches, Innovation Weeks and dedicated workshops, we’ll continue exploring topics like ethical decision-making, cultural humility and patient-centered care.
