Medical education program and objectives

The medical education program and objectives provide the framework for course development and evaluation across the continuum. Students will be assessed on program objectives throughout the MD and MS program to scaffold learning from orientation to commencement.

General Competency


Knowledge for practice (KFP) 

Graduates are able to demonstrate knowledge of established and evolving biomedical, clinical and social/behavioral sciences and apply knowledge to clinical care.

Medical education program objectives


  1. Demonstrate knowledge of basic, clinical, and pathophysiologic sciences needed for clinical practice
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of health systems science, nutrition, health humanities, biomedical engineering and augmented intelligence
  3. Evaluate the impact of ethnicity, culture, socioeconomic status, patient and provider biases, and other social determinants on health and disease
  4. Demonstrate basic knowledge of the common scientific methods used to study health and disease 

General Competency


Patient care (PC)

Graduates are able to provide patient-centered care that is appropriate and effective for the treatment of health problems.

Medical education program objective


  1. Obtain a thorough, relevant, culturally appropriate medical history 
  2. Integrate patient and caregiver values and preferences into patient care 
  3. Perform an accurate comprehensive or focused physical examination 
  4. Demonstrate basic procedural techniques 
  5. Demonstrate the ability to apply clinical reasoning, both verbally and in written form 
  6. Use advanced technology tools to deliver patient care 
  7. Propose hypothesis-driven diagnostic testing and interpret results 
  8. Create and prioritize differential diagnoses 
  9. Incorporate health promotion and disease prevention into patient care plans. 
  10. Formulate a basic therapeutic management plan for commonly encountered clinical conditions 
  11. Recognize acute life-threatening medical problems and recommend initial evaluation and management

Personal and professional development (PPD)  

Graduates are able to sustain lifelong personal and professional balance and growth.

Medical education program objective


  1. Apply an evidence-based approach to selecting, appraising, and applying evidence from scientific studies related to clinical questions and patients’ health problems 
  2. Actively seek and incorporate feedback and assessment data to improve performance 
  3. Apply leadership skills that enhance team function, the learning environment, and/or the health care delivery system

Systems-based practice (SBP)

Graduates will demonstrate an awareness of and responsiveness to the larger context and system of health care, as well as the ability to call effectively on other resources in the system and the community to provide optimal health care.

Medical education program objective


  1. Describe how health care financing and public policies affect access to and delivery of health care 
  2. Evaluate value, quality, and cost as they apply to patients and populations 
  3. Develop advocacy skills for under resourced communities to improve the health of patients and populations 
  4. Identify patient safety concerns, systems issues, and opportunities for quality improvement 
  5. Identify social determinants of health that impact health equity and strategies to mitigate barriers to care

Professionalism (P)

Graduates will demonstrate a commitment to professional responsibilities and behavior as well as adherence to ethical principles.

  1. Demonstrate compassion, sensitivity, trustworthiness, and respect in all settings 
  2. Demonstrate accountability, personal responsibility, and reliability for meeting expectations appropriate to the stage of training

Interpersonal skills and communication (ISC)

Graduates will be able to demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in the effective exchange of information and collaboration with patients, their families and health professionals.

  1. Utilize active listening, patient-centered language, and shared decision-making to engage with and educate patients and families 
  2. Communicate appropriately prioritized, organized, and concise information in verbal, written, and electronic format with other health professionals 
  3. Communicate in all settings and media with compassion, respect and intercultural awareness

Technology application and innovation (TAI)

Graduates demonstrate the intellectual curiosity necessary for scientific discovery through active participation in basic, translational, clinical, and/or engineering scholarship.

  1. Address clinical and scientific problems using technology-based innovations that translate from bench to bedside to society  
  2. Describe the interface between health care technology and the body 
  3. Apply information technology, augmented intelligence, and data science to the care of patients and populations 
  4. Apply the engineering design process and principles of systems thinking to approach basic science and clinical problems to facilitate innovation and discovery
