Medical education program and objectives

The medical education program and objectives provide the framework for course development and evaluation across the continuum. Students will be assessed on program objectives throughout the MD and MS program to scaffold learning from orientation to commencement.

General Competency


Knowledge for practice (KFP) 

Graduates are able to demonstrate knowledge of established and evolving biomedical, clinical and social/behavioral sciences and apply knowledge to clinical care.

Medical education program objective


  1. Describe the normal structure and function of the human body, at levels from molecules to cells to organs, to the entire organism  
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of the pathological processes of mental and physical illness  
  3. Describe the pathophysiologic manifestations of common diseases and the associated clinical, laboratory and radiographic findings  
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of health systems science, biomedical engineering and augmented intelligence  
  5. Demonstrate basic knowledge of the impact of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, patient and provider biases and other structural and cultural factors and social determinants on health and disease  
  6. Demonstrate basic knowledge of the common scientific methods used to study health and disease

General Competency


Patient care (PC)

Graduates are able to provide patient-centered care that is appropriate and effective for the treatment of health problems.

Medical education program objective


  1. Obtain a thorough, relevant, culturally appropriate medical history
  2. Demonstrate awareness of care that integrates patient values and preferences
  3. Perform an accurate comprehensive or focused physical examination
  4. Perform general clinical procedures
  5. Demonstrate the ability to apply clinical reasoning skills, both verbally and in written form
  6. Demonstrate ability in using advanced technology tools to deliver patient care
  7. Interpret laboratory data, imaging studies and other tests required for clinical care
  8. Create and prioritize differential diagnoses
  9. Select hypothesis-driven diagnostic testing and interpret results
  10. Formulate a basic therapeutic management plan for commonly encountered clinical conditions
  11. Formulate a plan for health screening, prevention and maintenance
  12. Recognize acute life-threatening medical problems and initiate stabilizing care

Personal and professional development (PPD)  

Graduates are able to sustain lifelong personal and professional balance and growth.

  1. Understand an evidence-based approach to selecting, appraising and applying evidence from scientific studies related to clinical questions and patients’ health problems
  2. Practice professional development skills that enhance individual career growth
  3. Develop skills to become physician leaders

Systems-based practice (SBP)

Graduates are able to demonstrate an awareness of and responsiveness to the larger context and system of health care, as well as the ability to call effectively on other resources in the system to provide optimal health care

  1. Understand health care financing and public policies that affect access to and delivery of health care
  2. Understand value, quality and cost as it applies to patients and populations
  3. Advocate for community assets and resources designed to improve the health of patients and populations
  4. Develop an understanding of quality improvement processes
  5. Develop skills to identify and address common sources of medical errors
  6. Develop strategies to mitigate barriers to health equity

Professionalism (PR)

Graduates demonstrate a commitment to professional responsibilities and behavior as well as adherence to ethical principles.

Interpersonal skills and communication (ISC)

Graduates demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in the effective exchange of information and collaboration with patients, their families and health professionals.

  1. Utilize active listening and shared decision making to counsel patients and families
  2. Share medical information in oral and written format to patients with closed loop communication skills
  3. Communicate appropriately prioritized, organized and concise information in verbal, written and electronic format with other health professionals
  4. Adapt communication to an individual’s unique needs, preferences and experiences

Technology application and innovation (TAI)

Graduates demonstrate the intellectual curiosity necessary for scientific discovery, leveraging technology for clinical and scientific problem-solving, understanding health care technology interfaces and applying information technology in patient care.

  1. Develop skills to address clinical and scientific problems using technology-based innovations that translate from bench to bedside to society
  2. Understand of the interface between health care technology and the body
  3. Understand the application of information technology, augmented intelligence and data science to the care of patients and populations
  4. Apply the engineering design process to facilitate innovation and discovery
