Student research projects
The John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering is committed to ensuring that student research is conducted responsibly, ethically, safely and in compliance with all applicable institutional, regulatory, clinical, sponsor and intellectual property requirements. A student research project is a structured, systematic investigation conducted to generate new knowledge, validate hypotheses, develop innovative solutions or advance understanding.
All Shufeldt students participating in research, scholarly, innovation, translational, clinical, engineering, laboratory, data science, artificial intelligence, quality improvement, case report, chart review, industry-sponsored, externally mentored or student-initiated projects must be registered with and reviewed by the Research Oversight Committee. This policy applies regardless of where or how the project originates, including but not limited to Shufeldt School, ASU, HonorHealth, another clinical partner, an external faculty mentor, an industry partner, a student-initiated effort or another institution.
All student research projects must have the relevant institutional and regulatory approvals before project activities begin. Depending on the nature of the project, these approvals may include, but are not limited to:
- Institutional Review Board approval or determination.
- Biosafety approval.
- Data use agreements.
- Clinical site approvals.
- Sponsored project or industry agreement approvals.
- Material transfer agreements.
- Confidentiality or nondisclosure agreements.
- Software, data, device or technology use approvals.
- Any other approval required by ASU, Shufeldt School, HonorHealth, another clinical partner, sponsor or external institution.
