Other funding
A number of external organizations offer financial assistance for medical school. Some assist with the costs associated with applying to medical school, while others support the costs of attending medical school.
When applying for external scholarships and financial assistance, it is important to review individual eligibility criteria and application instructions. Some programs include a service component after graduation.
Financial resources for medical school applicants
- Summer Health Professions Education Program
- SHPEP is a free summer enrichment program for college students interested in the health professions.
- Currently enrolled college freshmen, sophomores or juniors who have completed no more than 90 credits are eligible to apply.
- Fee Assistance Program (FAP)
- The AAMC Fee Assistance Program provides financial assistance for MCAT registration fees, AMCAS application fees and other benefits.
- Currently enrolled medical school students and graduates are ineligible for fee reimbursement through this program.
Scholarship resources for admitted and current students
- AMA Physicians of Tomorrow - Provides $10,000 in tuition assistance to medical students approaching their final year (16 scholarship categories).
- National Medical Fellowships - Provides scholarships with varied criteria to students attending U.S. medical schools; four annual application cycles.
- Tylenol Future Care Scholarships - Provides 10 $10,000 scholarships and 25 $5,000 scholarships to full-time students in graduate programs in medical school, nursing and/or pharmacy.
- Guinn B. Burton Medical Scholarship - Open to residents of Arizona who are seeking a degree in the medical field. Special consideration for students who participate in community service.
- NBME Educational Assistance Award for USMLE Fee Assistance - The National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) provides funding to a limited number of medical students to offset the cost of USMLE Step 1 or Step 2 CK exam registration fees.
- Arizona Community Foundation - Scholarships available through the Arizona Community Foundation support both Arizona residents and non-residents; the General Application opens in January with deadlines March 1 through May 1.
- College Board Scholarship Search - College Board’s database includes over 6,000 programs, totaling $1.5 billion in scholarships awarded annually. Search using the Academic Stage “Postgraduate Medical School.”
- Fastweb - Fastweb includes 1.5 million college scholarships, valued at more than $3.4 billion. Create a profile to view scholarships that match your strengths, interests, student activities and skills.
Military and veteran financial assistance
- Pat Tillman Veterans Center - This new program is not yet approved for use with GI Bill® benefits. More information about VA education benefits is available at the official U.S. government website at https://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/.
- Pat Tillman Foundation Scholars - Provides support for veteran and active duty military services members (and their spouses) pursuing a full-time graduate or professional degree.
