Applying for financial aid

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is the first step to be considered for federal and institutional financial aid. While graduate students can generally expect to be awarded loans, completing the FAFSA may be a requirement for other forms of need-based aid. We recommend submitting your FAFSA application annually by the published priority deadline.

Additional details about the application, eligibility and timelines for notification and award disbursement are outlined below:

To be eligible for most federal, state and ASU funding, students must:

  • Meet eligibility requirements set by the U.S. Department of Education

  • File a FAFSA for the current academic year

  • Not be in default on any prior student loan

  • Not owe a repayment on any Title IV financial aid

  • Be making Satisfactory Academic Progress

  • Submit all requested documents and those documents must not be found to limit your eligibility

  • Enroll in ASU classes such that it allows for disbursement of your offered financial aid (see ASU’s census policy)

Students can monitor their financial aid progress on their My ASU Finances tab. Any Financing Tasks displayed should be addressed immediately, as missing information can delay awards.

Admitted medical students with a completed FAFSA and no outstanding tasks can expect to be electronically notified of their federal financial aid package for the upcoming academic year during the months of March and April.

Scholarships are automatically accepted and visible on the student’s My ASU Finances tab. Students have the ability to accept or decline student loans via My ASU. Accepted amounts are split evenly between the fall and spring semesters.

All first-time borrowers must complete Entrance Loan Counseling and a Master Promissory Note. These are federal requirements which must be completed prior to disbursement. Students who have previously borrowed but had a break from school may be asked to complete these requirements again.

Financial Aid disbursement begins approximately five days prior to semester start dates.  Students are billed for tuition and other charges each semester, and available aid is first applied to unpaid account charges. Refer to the Academic Calendar for session start dates.

After disbursement, awards may fluctuate based on changes in enrollment (or recorded participation), which can sometimes result in a bill. Students should consult the School of Medicine Office of Financial Aid prior to withdrawing to learn potential impacts on finances and eligibility.

Students may request reconsideration of their aid eligibility, most often to demonstrate loss of income or to document additional expenses. It is highly recommended that students contact our School of Medicine Office of Financial Aid prior to submitting these forms to understand the potential impact and necessary documentation.
