Brain Medicine Division

Rethinking how we understand the brain

The Brain Medicine Division of Arizona State University’s Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering is advancing an integrated approach to brain health and disease — one reflecting how the brain actually works.

Rapid advances in neuroscience shows the brain functions as an integrated organ. Brain medicine brings traditionally separate disciplines together to better understand, diagnose and treat disorders of the brain.

One brain. An integrated approach.

Brain medicine looks beyond traditional neurologic and psychiatric categories to understand the underlying biology of brain health and disease.

See the whole brain

Brain medicine focuses on receptors, neurotransmitters, circuits and networks, regardless of brain region or clinical manifestations traditionally categorized as neurology or psychiatry.

The goal is not to replace existing specialties. It is to strengthen them by preparing physicians to apply a more complete understanding of the brain to diagnosis, assessment, management and treatment.

Beyond traditional boundaries

Connect neuroscience, neurology and psychiatry to understand brain health and disease.

From science to patient care

Apply advancements in neuroscience to diagnosis, assessment, management and treatment.

Built for future physicians

Prepare physicians to approach complex brain conditions from an integrated perspective.

Shape the future of brain medicine

The Brain Division is bringing disciplines together to prepare physicians to ask new questions, make more informed clinical decisions and advance human health.

Leading the future of brain medicine

Joshua C. Brown, MD, PhD, serves as Foundation Professor and Founding Chief of Brain Medicine at the John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering, with a joint appointment at HonorHealth.

A nationally recognized psychiatrist, neurologist and neuroscientist, Brown joined Arizona State University from McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School. His research combines neuroscience, brain stimulation, pharmacology, advanced imaging and neurobehavioral assessment to develop new approaches to understanding and treating brain disorders.

At ASU, Brown is building an interdisciplinary approach to brain medicine to bridge traditional boundaries between neurology and psychiatry and translates scientific discovery into better patient care.
