Financial aid and tuition policies

ASU’s School of Medicine and Advanced Medical Engineering adheres to both federal and institutional policies that determine tuition charges and financial aid eligibility. Course drops, withdrawals and academic performance can impact both existing and future aid eligibility.  Students should familiarize themselves with the various policies and resources available.

When students register for classes, they are obligated to pay all associated tuition and registration fees. This policy applies even if you choose not to participate or have an unsuccessful course outcome.

Medical students may qualify for a full or partial refund by withdrawing by specified dates:

Tuition refund eligibility

Policy

100% tuition refund

A student will be eligible for full tuition and fee refund for non-attendance or withdrawal by the end of the sixth week of the term.

50% tuition refund

A student will be eligible for a 50% tuition refund if the student attended classes but withdrew by the eighth week of the term.

0% tuition refund

Full tuition will be charged if the student withdraws starting on the first day of week 9 of the term (or later). At this point, tuition and fees for the semester are nonrefundable.

Adjustments to tuition and fees may leave the student with a credit balance. Financial Aid recipients may be required to return all or a portion of aid received, which may reduce or eliminate this credit or result in a balance due.

Additional information about the university Tuition Refund Policy is available on the Tuition and Aid website, though medical students should always refer to our published calendar for specific dates.

Students who receive financial aid are expected to earn their aid by participating in all of their classes every session. Confirmation of participation is verified at 14-day intervals for medical students.  Failure to participate in courses may result in financial aid being reduced or canceled.

Students may confirm participation in several ways:

  • Completing a survey in My ASU
  • Completing course activities in Elentra or Canvas (depending on delivery mode)
  • Course activities include submission of an academic assignment, online discussion or interactive activity

Federal financial aid is awarded under the assumption that students will be enrolled for a specified period of time, such as a session or term. When a student withdraws, a “Return of Title IV Funds” calculation is required. The number of days attended compared to the length of the scheduled enrollment period determines the amount of federal aid that must be returned.

Additional details and scenarios are available on the Tuition and Aid website.  All medical students who receive financial aid must meet with the associate dean of Student Affairs, the school registrar and a financial aid officer before leaving the school for an approved leave of absence, a withdrawal or a dismissal.

To remain eligible for federal student aid, students must meet satisfactory academic progress (SAP) standards.

In general, this includes annual measurement against three standards:

  • GPA standard: students must maintain a minimum ASU GPA consistent with graduation requirements for both degree programs:
    • Pass all medical curriculum courses (pass/fail grading)
    • Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in medical engineering courses
  • Pace rate standard: Students must complete a minimum of 67% of total ASU credit hours attempted.
  • Maximum credit hour standard: Students must complete their program within a specified timeline, usually 150% of the published length of the program (six years).

Students who fall out of compliance with standards may submit a SAP Review for consideration. The outcome of this review will depend on the nature of the extenuating circumstances and the quality of documentation provided.
